Ultium Cells LLC, a collaborative effort between General Motors and LG Energy Solution, is making significant strides in both employee compensation and working conditions within its battery cell and pack manufacturing facilities. This joint venture, responsible for supplying power to prominent electric vehicle models like the GMC Hummer EV, Chevrolet Blazer EV, and Cadillac Lyriq, has recently been at the center of discussions regarding wages and workplace environment.
One of the key concerns raised was the starting hourly pay at the manufacturing plant, which stood at $16.50. In addition, reports indicated potential exposure to non-OSHA-regulated chemicals among employees, leading to health issues and instances of fainting.

Acknowledging these concerns, the United Auto Workers (UAW) union, represented by Shawn Fain, engaged in negotiations with Ultium Cell LLC leaders. After productive discussions, a preliminary agreement was reached to implement a substantial wage increase of around 25% across all hourly positions at the plant. This increase elevates the starting hourly pay to approximately $20.50, a significant improvement for the workforce.
Notably, this wage adjustment is expected to take effect retrospectively from December 23, 2022. Employees who have been working since that date will be entitled to compensation for the period they worked prior to the pay increase implementation. According to reputable sources such as the Detroit Free Press, the compensation range is anticipated to fall between $3,000 and $7,000, reflecting the impact on individual employees.
While the proposed agreement is still pending a vote scheduled for this weekend, the UAW views this development as a significant stride towards addressing both the working conditions and compensation of employees at Ultium manufacturing facilities. The negotiated terms encompass not only wage increases but also improvements in overall working conditions, health and safety standards, seniority rights, and other concerns raised by the workforce.

Josh Ayers, a local chairman of the UAW, shared insights into ongoing negotiations, stating, “While we continue to negotiate a comprehensive initial agreement, our committee remains dedicated to addressing critical aspects such as working conditions, safety measures, seniority privileges, and future wage adjustments throughout the duration of this agreement.”
