UK’s Evolt Charging Unveils ‘Cable Alarm’ to Combat EV Charger Cable Theft

British firm Evolt Charging has launched a new security solution called “Cable Alarm,” designed to detect when electric vehicle (EV) charger cables are cut or removed. Claimed to be the first system of its kind in the UK, the innovation is already being trialed by charge point operator Osprey.

The device, manufactured by Circontrol, can be installed on Osprey’s DC chargers in under an hour, according to Evolt. When activated, the system triggers an audible alarm and a flashing beacon, with alarm durations adjustable between 10 minutes and two hours.

“The device can also be integrated with notification and management systems, as well as existing security systems and site lighting to add a further layer of protection on site,” Evolt explained in a statement.

Osprey’s Operations Director, Lewis Gardiner, emphasized the importance of collaboration in tackling cable theft. “Evolt’s new Cable Alarm is a welcome, proactive approach. Osprey have always been quick to trial new technology, and we look forward to seeing the impact of this innovation on the ground,” he said.

Evolt Managing Director Anne Buckingham highlighted the growing concern of cable theft. “It is inconvenient and frustrating for EV drivers and costly for the chargepoint owners, so we need to be one step ahead of the criminals,” she said. Buckingham noted that while the scrap value of stolen cables may be as low as £4, replacing them can cost charge point operators (CPOs) up to £1,000.

The issue of EV charger cable theft is not unique to the UK. ChargePoint recently announced its own cut-resistant cables and alarm system, with plans to selectively license the design to other manufacturers later this year as part of an industry-wide effort to combat theft and vandalism.

Evolt’s new system represents an effort to address the financial and operational challenges posed by this growing trend, as CPOs increasingly seek innovative tools to secure their charging infrastructure.
