The UK Department for Transport and Innovate UK are supporting an initiative that will see police officers on electric three-wheeled motorcycles on the streets. The new motorcycles, developed in a partnership between Mahle Powertrain and White Motorcycle Concepts (WMC), will replace the combustion engine of the Yamaha Tricity 300 with an all-electric powertrain from Mahle.
Mahle is using advanced simulation technology to determine the best powertrain specifications for the motorcycles, and is investigating the use of traction motors and charger systems, slow-charging and ultra-fast charging technologies. The company is considering integrating a traction motor and transmission into the rear swing-arm to improve performance and efficiency. Mahle aims to achieve an operating range of approximately 100 miles (160 km).

The partnership between WMC and Mahle has already seen the development of a hybrid three-wheeled motorcycle for the Northamptonshire Police. The new electric motorcycle for the police force will incorporate a venturi duct that reduces drag and improves efficiency. The use of these vehicles will provide an alternative and practical way for police officers to move around their communities and offer a visible presence while meeting the green agenda.
Nick Adderley, the Northamptonshire Police chief constable and UK Police lead for motorcycles, is excited about the new development. He said, “We need to continue to ensure we are prepared for the future with a sustainable fleet that not only meets the green agenda but also enables us to deliver the policing service our communities need and want. Our close involvement in these developments ensures the operational vehicle meets our specific requirements and I look forward to seeing the output from this study.”
The introduction of these electric motorcycles marks a significant step towards a sustainable future for law enforcement, as well as for the broader adoption of electric vehicles in the UK. The partnership between Mahle and WMC serves as an example of how collaboration between companies can lead to innovative solutions to reduce carbon emissions and improve efficiency.
