Bologna’s public transport operator, TPER, has opened tenders for the procurement of new electric buses in two separate lots, totaling €126.48 million. The tender process, which will remain open until March 31, 2025, aims to enhance the city’s electric bus fleet as part of its broader push toward sustainable public transport.
The first lot seeks 35 trolleybuses equipped with In Motion Charging (IMC) technology, with an option to procure an additional 35 units. These vehicles are expected to measure between 18 and 18.75 meters in length, include four doors, IMC functionality, and designated seating for individuals with disabilities.
The second lot targets 19 battery electric vehicles (BEVs) with low floors, lengths ranging from 12 to 12.30 meters, three doors, a wheelchair station, and fast charging capability via a pantograph system.
This is not TPER’s first foray into electric buses. The operator is already deploying 24 Karsan electric buses from a tender awarded in 2022 and has integrated VDL Citea buses ordered in 2021.
Bologna’s electric bus charging infrastructure, supplied by Kempower, was also completed earlier in 2024, reinforcing the city’s readiness for expanded electrification.
In addition to electric buses, TPER has invested heavily in alternative energy solutions. In late 2023, the operator placed a significant order for hydrogen buses from Solaris, following a tender announced in December 2022. TPER has also partnered with Wolftank to establish a joint venture focused on hydrogen refueling systems, highlighting Bologna’s multi-pronged approach to decarbonizing public transport.
