Toyota’s Steer-By-Wire Technology Set for Market Debut in 2024

Toyota is on the verge of introducing its groundbreaking steer-by-wire technology, with production slated to commence by the end of 2024. The innovative system, initially showcased on the all-electric Lexus RZ last year, is set to revolutionize steering and maneuverability in upcoming electric vehicles (EVs).

The steer-by-wire technology made its debut in the Lexus RZ, which has already hit the market. However, the initial version of the system faced some challenges, prompting Toyota to fine-tune the technology for optimal performance. One significant improvement is the steering ratio, which has been increased from 150 degrees to a more responsive 200 degrees.

Autocar recently had the opportunity to test the updated system, reporting that the enhanced steering ratio has improved the system’s overall feel, making it less nervous and more stable, especially at lower speeds. The changes also significantly enhance the ease of reversing, a key aspect of day-to-day driving.

Toyota has actively engaged with feedback from hundreds of individuals to refine the steer-by-wire system, ensuring it meets stringent legislative requirements in Europe and China. Initially, the technology will be integrated into the Lexus RZ and Toyota bZ4X, with the potential for over-the-air software updates in the future, although current regulations do not permit this feature.

Furthermore, Toyota plans to extend the use of the steer-by-wire system to other EVs in its lineup. This technology will be a fundamental component of Toyota and Lexus EVs built upon an innovative new architecture, as showcased by the striking LF-ZC concept at the Japan Mobility Show.

Simon Humphries, Lexus design chief, emphasized that the steer-by-wire system opens up exciting possibilities for interior designs in future models. “We want the interior to be as open as possible,” he stated, explaining that the system’s reduced reliance on mechanical components allows for more freedom in interior design, creating a cleaner and more spacious environment for passengers.
