Toyota has officially launched its first all-electric sedan, the bZ3, in China. The midsize sedan is part of Toyota’s Beyond Zero (bZ) series and is based on the e-TNGA platform. The car is equipped with a single rear-mounted electric motor, available in two sizes, 135 kW and 180 kW, with a peak torque of 303 Nm, enabling it to accelerate from 0 to 50 km/h in just 3.2 seconds. The car is available in two range versions with battery packs of 49.9 kWh and 65.3 kWh respectively, with CLTC ranges of 517 km and 616 km.
Toyota’s joint venture in China, FAW Toyota, unveiled the bZ3 at a launch event, offering three versions with starting prices of RMB 169,800 ($24,710), RMB 189,800 and RMB 199,800. The model was initially unveiled in China on October 25, 2022, and was made available for pre-sale on March 6, 2023. As of April 16, 2023, FAW Toyota has already received 5,000 orders for the bZ3.
Unlike many local car companies, the bZ3 began deliveries at the same time as its official launch. The car is equipped with a blade battery pack supplied by BYD and an in-car system developed by BYD Toyota EV Technology, a joint venture between BYD and Toyota. The bZ3 supports fast charging and can be charged from 30% to 80% in just 27 minutes on a DC charge. The car’s dimensions are 4,725 mm in length, 1,835 mm in width, and 1,475 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,880 mm and a wind resistance coefficient of as low as 0.218 cd.
Overall, the launch of the bZ3 is a significant move for Toyota as it seeks to expand its offerings in the electric vehicle market. With its impressive range and fast charging capabilities, the bZ3 is sure to appeal to a wide range of consumers in China who are increasingly looking to make the switch to electric vehicles.
