Toyota bZ4X Electric Vehicle Accidentally Rolls into Ocean Near Boston Pier

A Toyota bZ4X electric vehicle inadvertently rolled off a pier and plunged into the ocean just north of Boston after the driver allegedly forgot to engage the parking brake on Wednesday.

According to local sources, the incident unfolded around 2 PM when a white Toyota bZ4X started moving with two occupants on board as they were attempting to enjoy their lunch. Subsequently, the driver exited the vehicle to dispose of trash but failed to put it in park, resulting in its unintended movement.

One of the passengers, Gerry Cardona, recounted the ordeal, stating, “We came over here to have some lunch.” He described his unsuccessful attempt to halt the vehicle’s progress with a snow brush, explaining, “Next thing you know, I did everything I could, rolled down the window, and I climbed out and jumped in the water.”

Emergency responders from the Lynn fire and police departments promptly arrived at the Blossom Street Pier Ferry Terminal, where fortunately, no injuries were reported. Nevertheless, the Toyota bZ4X sustained significant damage and was declared a total loss following its collision with the ocean.

The Toyota bZ4X, hailed as the automaker’s inaugural mass-produced all-electric vehicle, had recently been unveiled with updated features, including a dual-voltage charging cable and enhanced display information on the MID regarding charge status and estimated range.

The incident underscores the importance of adhering to proper vehicle parking procedures and may prompt considerations for additional safety measures by Toyota. The 2024 Toyota bZ4X, priced starting at $43,070 excluding destination charges, offers a range of up to 252 miles and includes a one-year free charging offer through EVgo for buyers or lessees.
