The EX90 Electric SUV represents the start of a new era for Volvo

Volvo EX90

Volvo will introduce its newest electric Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) in 2023, the Volvo EX90. This SUV brings not only an evolution as an electric vehicle, but also a design evolution as a future generation of zero-emission vehicles.

In appearance, the EX90 is similar to the XC90 seven-passenger SUV. It’s just that the main drivers are no longer gasoline engines, but electric engines which are Volvo’s transition to an electric vehicle lineup by 2030. One of the most ambitious electrification blueprints in the automotive industry and very important to Volvo’s ambition to become a climate neutral company by 2040.

Volvo reveals the electric flagship SUV fully reflects the company’s global footprint, the Volvo EX90 will be built in the United States from 2023 and then in China. At that time, Volvo was targeting both production facilities to be climate neutral.

The Volvo EX90 is a versatile and stylish family car of modern proportions, combined with cutting-edge technologies in core computing, connectivity and electrification to optimize safety, efficiency and aesthetics.

Familiar design elements such as the sculpted hood, Thor’s Hammer signature LED headlights, and vertical taillights ending in a flourishing C shape can still be found in the EX90’s design, but new details take electric SUV design into the future.

For example, the T-shaped Thor’s Hammer lights up sequentially with the LED fog lights when the SUV is started. Activating the headlights causes the horizontal segments of the DRL to open like an eyelid, turning sideways to reveal the LED headlights and high-beam projector.

The EX90 continues Volvo’s trend of simple dashboard designs featuring lightweight, natural materials punctuated by a pair of large displays. Front and center is a vertical 14.5-inch display powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon Cockpit Platform and Unreal Engine 3D graphics.

Android Automotive OS and Google services once again form the core of the Volvo user experience, delivering Google Maps, Google Assistant and Play Store apps over standard 5G data connections. The EX90 will also come standard with phone-as-key technology with multiple user profiles. Apple users will also be able to enjoy standard CarPlay wireless connectivity.

Based on a completely new electric technology developed in-house, the Volvo EX90 is your perfect companion for a more sustainable family lifestyle. Delivers an emission-free driving range of up to 600 kilometers on a single charge, according to the WLTP test cycle, it charges from 10 to 80 percent in less than 30 minutes.

The initially available twin-motor all-wheel drive version is powered by a 111kWh battery and two permanent magnet electric motors together for a performance version of 380 kW (517 hp) and 910 Nm of torque. Combined with the new chassis, this creates an outstanding and smooth driving experience.

The Volvo EX90 contains about 15 percent recycled steel, 25 percent recycled aluminum and 48 kilograms of recycled plastic and bio-based materials, which is equivalent to about 15 percent of the total plastic used in the car – the highest level of any Volvo car to date. .

Lastly, the EX90 is Volvo’s first car with all the hardware needed to enable two-way charging. This is a technology where you can use your car battery as an extra energy supply, for example to power your home, other electrical devices or another Volvo electric car. There are plans to make two-way charging available in the future, starting with specific markets.

With deliveries expected by the end of 2023, the full-electric EX90 SUV is the next step in the Swedish automaker’s plans to sell only BEVs by 2030.
