The global surge in the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) has sparked a notable shift in urban transportation preferences, as more individuals in Asia and Europe opt for lightweight e-bikes and electric scooters over conventional cars and public transit. While China has been a prominent player in this domain, several startups are emerging with a determination to establish domestic manufacturing capabilities.
A prime illustration of this trend can be found in Thailand’s own Strom, a leading innovator in EV technology within the country. Over the years, Strom has pioneered a range of compact commuter EVs tailor-made for urban travel. The company’s subsidiary, Oska Battery Group, has also made significant strides in EV battery technology, catering not only to electric motorcycles but also consumer electronics, golf carts, and industrial applications. With nearly three decades of experience, Strom is now set on expanding its footprint, recently announcing the establishment of a new production facility within its home turf of Thailand.
With the inauguration of this advanced production site, Strom is poised to enhance its capacity to cater to Thailand’s burgeoning demand for EVs. Lt. Col. M.R. Biranubongse Bhanubandh, the Managing Director of Strom, emphasized the company’s ambition, stating, “Strom is steadfast in its commitment to emerge as a dominant force in the electric motorcycle sector both in Thailand and across Asia. The introduction of our new electric motorcycle factory is geared towards bolstering production capabilities, ensuring our electric motorcycles resonate strongly with riders in terms of performance, efficiency, affordability, and eco-friendliness. Our target envisions a 30 percent growth in sales for the current year.”
A perusal of Strom’s official website unveils an intriguing lineup of electric motorcycle models. Among them, the Sailfish, with its retro aesthetics reminiscent of classic Vespas, offers an appealing and functional mode of urban transportation. Featuring a vintage body design and front cantilever suspension, it embodies a touch of nostalgia. The Panther, on the other hand, assumes a more utilitarian role, complete with an expansive top case designed to accommodate package and food deliveries. Finally, the Gorilla serves as Strom’s contemporary urban commuter scooter.

When it comes to performance, the scooters derive power from motors ranging between 1,500 to 3,000 watts, depending on the application. With a maximum speed of 50 miles per hour, these vehicles rely on lithium batteries providing an estimated range of 80 to 200 kilometers (50 to 125 miles).
As Strom inaugurates its new production facility, the company positions itself to address Thailand’s evolving mobility landscape while contributing to the wider global shift towards sustainable transportation alternatives.
