After an extended three-year beta phase, Tesla’s CEO, Elon Musk, recently announced that the upcoming Full Self-Driving (FSD) v12 update is nearing its release. While Musk has praised the advancements, there is still uncertainty surrounding the system’s regulatory approval and true autonomy level.

Tesla’s FSD package has been in beta since late 2020, and despite notable improvements, it is currently classified as a driver-assist system. This means that drivers must maintain full responsibility and constant monitoring while using FSD. If any accidents occur during FSD operation, the driver is held accountable, not Tesla.

The pivotal moment for Tesla’s FSD package will be when the company takes full responsibility for its performance and gains regulatory approval for level 4 or 5 autonomous driving. Until then, FSD remains a set of impressive driver-assistance features.

Elon Musk recently tested an “alpha build” of Tesla FSD Beta v12, which he enthusiastically described as “mind-blowing.” However, critics have raised concerns about Musk’s tendency to overuse strong language to describe Tesla’s advancements in the past.

The timeline for the official release of FSD v12 remains unspecified, but Musk has assured the public that it will be launched before the end of the year.

It’s been seven years since Tesla showcased its initial FSD video, which was later acknowledged as “staged.” At that time, Tesla made a commitment that all cars produced thereafter would be equipped with the necessary hardware for Full Self-Driving capabilities.

As the release of FSD v12 draws near, industry experts and regulators will closely scrutinize its features and performance to determine its true potential and impact on road safety. Until then, Tesla owners should continue to view FSD as a driver-assist system with impressive capabilities.
