Tesla is currently working on an all-new, next-generation vehicle platform, which is expected to be ready in the not-too-distant future. The company’s Q4 and full-year 2022 financial report revealed that the new platform is currently under development and more details will be shared at the upcoming Investor Day event on March 1, 2023.
“Our next generation vehicle platform is under development, with additional details to be shared at Investor Day (March 1st 2023).”
Not much is known about the specifics of Tesla’s next-generation platform, however, according to previous reports, it is expected to be for electric cars smaller in size than the Model 3/Model Y and bring a significant reduction in vehicle cost. Tesla CEO, Elon Musk, has stated that EVs based on the new platform would be produced at a volume higher than all other vehicles combined.
Speculation surrounds the new platform includes the possibility of a sub-compact, entry-level electric model for the masses or a stripped-down robotaxi. To achieve a cost reduction of up to 50%, Tesla will likely have to apply new technologies to simplify production and manufacture millions of units annually.
It’s important to note that while a new platform is one thing, the development of vehicles based on it is another. Tesla has yet to reveal any details about the new electric car/cars. Only time will tell what is in the works, but in general, it’s positive news that electric cars will be more affordable, possibly even cheaper than gasoline cars.
