Tesla has recently revealed some exciting details about its Gigafactory in New York and its Prefabricated Supercharger Units (SPUs) during the Investor Day event held in 2023. With a 2,000-strong team in Buffalo, Tesla Giga New York is responsible for manufacturing the next generation Superchargers and Semi chargers. Rebecca Tinucci, Tesla’s head of charging infrastructure teams, briefly discussed the SPUs and how they are made at Giga New York.
Tinucci mentioned that Tesla has extended its manufacturing expertise to the construction of Supercharger sites. At Giga New York, Tesla pre-builds four post Supercharger units, loads them onto a truck, transports them to the site, and cranes them into position. The SPUs have helped Tesla save 15% on Supercharger deployment costs and allowed the company to install a site within a few days.

Tesla’s recent tweet hinted that the New York facility also manufactures the V4 Superchargers, which the company has already rolled out in Europe. Tinucci announced during her presentation at Investor Day that the Supercharger V4 stalls were being installed in Europe, and within two weeks of her announcement, they were already operational.
Thanks to Tesla’s Prefabricated Supercharger Units, the company can now expand its Supercharger network even faster. Even President Biden has recognized the importance of Tesla’s charging network in his goal of delivering 500,000 chargers to highways and communities by 2030.
