Reports from local news outlets Taiwan Economic Daily and China’s IT House say that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited (TSMC) will be the chip supplier for Tesla that will use its next-generation Full Self-Driving (FSD) computers.
According to the report, the chips that TSMC will supply to Tesla will be manufactured on both 4nm and 5nm processes.
If the reports are accurate, Tesla will become one of TSMC’s largest and most well-known customers by 2023. Tesla will be TSMC’s first customer in electric vehicle manufacturing on a large scale.
Neither TSMC nor Tesla have issued any comment on the report.
Tesla has been known for its high technology and is always developing the latest technology for sustainable mobility. Even though its Hardware 3 computers are already formidable, Tesla is poised to launch Hardware 4 computers in the near future.
Details about Tesla’s Hardware 4 computer are still scarce. One thing is for sure, Elon Musk has confirmed that the new component will be launched in the Cybertruck electric pickup truck.
The Cybertruck itself will begin production next year and it makes sense for Tesla to secure a supplier for its next generation of FSD chips at this stage.
Given the complexity of the work being done, Tesla’s next generation of computers, to be supplied by TSMC, will have roughly three times the power of the company’s current FSD computers.
