Tesla’s Shanghai plant is set to begin mass production of the updated Model Y next month, according to a report by local media outlet LatePost. The revisions to the Model Y will mirror updates made to the Model 3 earlier, including enhancements to the interior, exterior, battery capacity, motor performance, and self-driving capabilities.
In addition to the refreshed Model Y, the plant is expected to start deliveries of a six-seat variant in the fourth quarter of 2025, as per the report. Tesla’s Giga Shanghai, the company’s largest factory with an annual production capacity of 1 million vehicles, manufactures both the Model 3 sedan and the Model Y crossover.
Tesla’s Shanghai operations began in late 2019, and the locally produced Model 3 launched in January 2020, followed by the Model Y in January 2021. The electric vehicle manufacturer recently debuted the updated Model 3, also known as the Model 3 Highland, which boasts a longer range and improved suspension system. The Model Y, one of Tesla’s best-selling models in China, contributed significantly to the company’s overall performance, with 418,428 units delivered from January to November 2024, marking a 5.57% increase year-on-year.
Reports also indicate that Tesla plans to produce a seven-seat version of the Model Y by the end of 2025, further expanding the options available to consumers.
