Tesla is preparing to roll out a major upgrade to the in-car graphics of its Model S and Model X vehicles, according to code findings revealed by a well-known hacker.
“Tesla is adding Unreal Engine-based AP viz (the one you see today is Godot-based). The binaries are already shipping, starting from firmware 2025.20 only on AMD-based S and X cars for now,” hacker GreenTheOnly wrote in a post on X. He added that after some work, he managed to get the system running on the main infotainment display.
The update would mark a shift from Tesla’s current Godot-based graphics to Epic Games’ Unreal Engine, a technology widely used in video game development and increasingly adopted by carmakers for real-time vehicle visualization. The move would give Tesla drivers interactive features, such as the ability to spin the car graphic around and open or close certain elements on screen.
Tesla’s reported switch follows a trend already embraced by rivals including Rivian, Volvo, Ford, Lotus and GMC. The Verge noted that GMC highlighted Unreal Engine during the launch of the Hummer EV, using it to display drive modes and system updates.
While Tesla has not commented publicly on the reported update, the move is expected to extend to Autopilot and Full Self-Driving (Supervised) visualizations, potentially giving drivers a more immersive interface.
