Tesla said its Model Y has remained the world’s best-selling passenger car for three consecutive years, with cumulative global sales exceeding 4 million units.
The U.S. electric vehicle maker cited data from market research firms including JATO Dynamics, Statista, and Focus2Move, stating that the Model Y has outsold all internal combustion, hybrid, and electric models over the past three years.
The announcement comes alongside Tesla’s broader production and delivery figures for 2025, when the company produced 1,654,667 vehicles and delivered 1,636,129 units globally.
Tesla also highlighted a recent recovery in China, where its retail sales rose 42.68% year-on-year to 38,206 units in February. The performance lifted Tesla’s share of the country’s battery electric vehicle (BEV) market to 13.74%, the highest level since April 2024.
The Model Y was a key driver of that rebound, with retail sales in China increasing 215.84% year-on-year to 25,286 units in February, and rising 50.11% compared with January.
However, Tesla faces intensifying competition in the Chinese market. In January, the Model Y was overtaken as the country’s best-selling EV by Xiaomi’s YU7 SUV, reflecting the growing strength of domestic manufacturers.
For the full year of 2025, Model Y retail sales in China totalled 425,337 units, a decline of 34.44% from the previous year. Despite the drop, the model still accounted for nearly 68% of Tesla’s total sales in the country.
Including exports, wholesale shipments of the China-produced Model Y reached 538,994 units in 2025, down 3.18% year-on-year.
The data underscores the Model Y’s continued global dominance while highlighting the competitive pressures Tesla faces in key markets such as China, where local automakers are rapidly gaining ground in the electric vehicle segment.
