Tesla Recalls 127,785 Model 3 Due to Rear Motor Inverter Problem

Tesla recalled 127,785 Model 3 vehicles produced between January 11, 2019 and January 25, 2022. This recall is the second following a previous recall less than two months ago.

According to China’s State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) website, the recall includes 34,207 imported Model 3 vehicles and 93,578 Model 3 vehicles manufactured at Giga Shanghai.

This recall is related to a problem with the semiconductor component of the rear motor inverter. This problem can cause the inverter to not be able to control the electric current properly so that it can damage the motor.

If this problem is experienced while the vehicle is parked, the driver will not be able to start the car. Meanwhile, if it happens when the car is moving, then the car will lose propulsion. In extreme cases it can increase the risk of a vehicle collision

As a result of this problem, Tesla said it would fix parts of the motor control software. The company will make repairs free of charge at no charge.

This recall comes after a Model 3 user reported on April 6 in a forum on automotive website Dongchedi. The Model 3 user said he experienced a sudden loss of power while driving on the highway.

The Model 3 user said he was driving at about 100 kilometers per hour when the screen suddenly said, “The vehicle can no longer be driven, please stop immediately.”

He tried to press the accelerator pedal, but the car did not respond. Fortunately, however, he crossed the two lanes safely and stopped at the side of the road.
