Tesla is preparing for a significant update to its highly popular Model 3, with production reportedly set to switch to the revised version known as the ‘Highland’ Model 3. Observers in China have reported that the current Model 3 production at the Tesla factory in Shanghai will cease on August 14, making way for the upcoming model.

According to sources on Twitter, the ‘Highland’ Model 3 has been in test production in China and is expected to enter series production in September. The switch to the new model involves alternating two days of production of the current Model 3 with two days of ‘Highland’ production, eventually transitioning entirely to the revised version two weeks later.

Details regarding the exact changes in the ‘Highland’ Model 3 are limited, but prototype images suggest noticeable updates to the front and rear of the vehicle, giving it a more impressive design with similarities to the Model S and Porsche Macan. There are also speculations that the new version may do away with traditional steering column levers for turn signals, headlights, and wipers.

One of the most significant anticipated upgrades is the potential adoption of new battery cells from CATL, featuring lithium manganese iron phosphate chemistry (LMFP). This could enhance the base model’s range from the current 491 kilometers (according to WLTP) to an impressive 556 kilometers. However, it remains uncertain how Tesla plans to address any potential charging performance trade-offs associated with LMFP cells.

Tesla’s focus on reducing component count and interior complexity was previously reported by Reuters in November 2022. This emphasis on streamlining production could lead to cost reductions and potentially bring the price of the new vehicle to around RMB 200,000 (approximately €25,400).

The impact of these updates is reflected in the pushback of Model 3 delivery dates for European markets, with new orders likely to be delivered from October or November 2023, and the Performance variant possibly as late as January 2024.

As the excitement builds around the imminent release of the ‘Highland’ Model 3, Tesla continues to demonstrate its commitment to advancing electric vehicle technology and meeting the demands of a rapidly growing market.
