In Australia, there has been a remarkable surge in the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs), and the Tesla Model Y has emerged as the frontrunner. According to the data released by the Federated Chamber of Automotive Industries, the Model Y has achieved impressive sales figures, with 3,178 units sold in May. This accomplishment has propelled the Model Y to become the best-selling SUV and the third best-selling vehicle overall in Australia, trailing only the Toyota Hi-Lux (5,772) and the Ford Ranger (4,110).

The strong sales of the Model Y have not only bolstered Tesla’s position but have also resulted in a new record for EVs in Australia. May witnessed the delivery of a record-breaking 8,124 EVs, marking the highest number of EVs sold in a single month. In 2023, EVs now account for 7 percent of the total new car market, with Tesla leading the way. Astonishingly, Tesla has already surpassed its sales numbers from the entire year of 2022, achieving sales of 18,559 EVs within just five months of 2023.

While Tesla’s dominance in Australia seems unchallenged, it is worth noting that the competition in the EV market is gradually increasing. The imminent arrival of contenders such as the MG 4, GMW Ora Cat, and potentially the BYD Dolphin may pose a challenge to Tesla’s supremacy. As a result, both BYD and Tesla are likely to compete fiercely for market dominance in Australia.

The global sales landscape reflects a similar trend, as the Model Y emerged as the world’s best-selling car in the first quarter of this year. This significant achievement marks the first time an EV has claimed the title of the world’s best-selling car, surpassing established models like the affordable Toyota Corolla and the popular RAV4. This accomplishment further solidifies the growing prominence and acceptance of electric vehicles on a global scale.
