Tesla’s Shanghai factory has begun mass production of the Model Y L, a longer-wheelbase version of its top-selling crossover, according to accounts from Chinese industry observers. The new variant is expected to feature three rows of seating for six passengers, positioning it to compete more directly in China’s growing three-row electric SUV market.
Industry reports suggest Tesla China is in the process of deciding which domestic showrooms will be the first to display the Model Y L. The vehicle’s specifications recently appeared in the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology’s (MIIT) latest list of new energy vehicle models eligible for purchase tax exemptions, clearing a key regulatory step ahead of deliveries.
According to the MIIT filing, the Model Y L is a dual-motor electric SUV equipped with an 82.0-kWh lithium-ion battery from LG Energy Solution, offering a range of 751 km under the CLTC standard. It features a second row with two captain seats, catering to buyers seeking greater comfort and interior space. The variant will be produced on existing Model Y lines at Tesla’s Shanghai plant, enabling faster production ramp-up and lower tooling costs.
The launch of the Model Y L expands Tesla’s line-up in China, which has so far offered three-row seating only in the higher-priced Model X. By introducing a more affordable model with increased passenger capacity and range, Tesla is aiming to capture demand from family-oriented buyers and ride-hailing operators seeking spacious, long-range EVs.
