Tesla has launched the Tesla Model Y L in Japan, expanding availability of the long-wheelbase model to 11 markets across the Asia-Pacific region as the company seeks to build on rising demand.
The Model Y L is offered in a single “Premium” grade with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive configuration, priced at 7.59 million yen (around €41,200), including a registration processing fee. The model qualifies for Japan’s Clean Energy Vehicle (CEV) subsidy of 1.27 million yen, reducing the effective price to 6.32 million yen. Additional local incentives in Tokyo of up to 800,000 yen could lower the price further to as little as 5.52 million yen.
Tesla said deliveries in Japan are scheduled to begin by the end of April, with customers receiving three years of free Supercharging if they take delivery by June. The company currently operates 726 Superchargers across 146 locations nationwide.
The Model Y L features a six-seat 2+2+2 layout, offering increased interior space and comfort compared with the standard five-seat version. With rear seats folded, cargo capacity reaches 2,539 litres, while the front trunk remains at 116 litres.
The vehicle includes adaptive suspension with electronically controlled dampers, a 788 km WLTC-rated range, and performance figures of 0–100 kph in 5.0 seconds with a top speed of 201 kph. Additional features include ventilated front seats, heated second-row seating, an 18-speaker audio system, and exclusive design elements such as Cosmic Silver paint and 19-inch wheels.
Tesla’s expansion comes amid growing demand in Japan. According to Nikkei, the company sold around 10,600 vehicles in the country last year, representing a 90% year-on-year increase.
Richi Hashimoto, who leads Tesla’s operations in Japan, told Reuters the company sold approximately 5,000 vehicles in the first quarter of 2026 alone. He added that Tesla plans to expand its service network from 14 to around 30 locations, alongside its existing 35 sales outlets.
Tesla aims to become the leading imported car brand in Japan by early 2027, Hashimoto said.
The Model Y L was first introduced in China and has since been rolled out across Asia-Pacific markets including Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea, Australia, and Thailand, as Tesla broadens its regional EV portfolio.
