Tesla has launched a new variant of its Model Y in the United States, offering a rear-wheel-drive (RWD) Long Range version priced at $44,990. The new model becomes the entry-level option for the updated Model Y lineup following a design refresh earlier this year.

Previously, the automaker had only offered the refreshed Model Y in an all-wheel-drive (AWD) configuration. The lineup began with a $60,000 Launch Edition and was later expanded to include a regular AWD version starting at $49,000.

With a projected range of 357 miles, the new RWD version offers about 30 miles more than its AWD counterpart. However, it has a slightly slower 0 to 60 mph acceleration time, at 5.4 seconds versus 4.6 seconds for the AWD model. This trade-off is due to the single-motor powertrain of the RWD trim.

Deliveries of the new version are expected to begin within the next three to five weeks in the U.S. The RWD Long Range model was recently launched in European markets, where Tesla also offers a more affordable Standard Range variant.

The introduction comes as Tesla works to manage inventory levels and stimulate demand. Following a relatively modest order backlog in the U.S., the company has begun building up supply and offering subsidized financing on the updated Model Y. The new RWD trim is intended to appeal to customers looking for a more affordable option with extended range.
