Tesla has initiated a recall for 362,758 vehicles that are equipped with the company’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) Beta system, according to a post on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) official website. The recall covers certain 2016-2023 Model S, Model X, 2017-2023 Model 3, and 2020-2023 Model Y vehicles that are equipped with the automaker’s Autosteer on City Streets feature, commonly known as “Full Self-Driving Beta” or “FSD Beta.”

The NHTSA states that the FSD Beta feature may cause the vehicle to exceed the speed limit of inner-city roads, resulting in it travelling through intersections in an unlawful or unpredictable manner, which could lead to an increase in crashes.

In particular, the FSD Beta system may allow the vehicle to act unsafely around intersections, such as entering a stop sign-controlled intersection without stopping completely or travelling straight through an intersection while in a turn-only lane. The system may also respond inadequately to changes in posted speed limits or fail to account for the driver’s adjustment of the vehicle’s speed to exceed posted speed limits.

Tesla contacted the NHTSA in late January 2023, about a potential issue related to the FSD Beta feature. The electric vehicle maker was advised by the NHTSA to file a recall notice, and the two entities held several meetings to discuss the agency’s concerns, as well as Tesla’s proposed over-the-air software improvements to address the issue.

On February 7, 2023, despite not agreeing with the agency’s analysis, Tesla issued a voluntary recall out of an abundance of caution. As of February 14, 2023, Tesla had identified 18 warranty claims received between May 8, 2019 and September 12, 2022, which may be related to the FSD Beta fault. No injuries or deaths have been associated with the potential issue.

The FSD Beta fault will be fixed through an over-the-air software update, as is typical for most Tesla recalls. Tesla will release an OTA software update, which will be provided free of charge, and owner notification letters are expected to be sent out by April 15, 2023. Owners may contact Tesla customer service at 1-877-798-3752, and Tesla’s number for this recall is SB-23-00-001.
