Tesla has expanded its standard new-vehicle warranty in Australia and New Zealand, extending coverage to five years with unlimited kilometres for new Model 3 and Model Y vehicles delivered from Jan. 1, 2026.
Under the revised policy, Tesla replaces its previous four-year or 80,000-kilometre basic warranty with a five-year term that removes kilometre limits for private owners. Vehicles used for commercial purposes will be covered for five years or 150,000 kilometres, whichever comes first. The update also includes five years of 24/7 roadside assistance across both countries.

Tesla said the expanded warranty applies not only to vehicles delivered from the start of 2026, but also to customers who took delivery earlier in the year, shortly before the announcement.
The basic vehicle warranty covers a broad range of components, including corrosion protection, exterior paint, and multimedia and infotainment systems. Tesla said the move reflects its effort to strengthen customer confidence and respond to expectations in the Australian and New Zealand markets.

“Tesla Australia & New Zealand is thrilled to pioneer global firsts that redefine the driving experience for our customers,” said Thom Drew, Tesla’s country director for Australia and New Zealand. “This update aligns with local market expectations and instils lasting confidence in Tesla ownership,” he said, according to CarExpert.
Local media noted that the change brings Tesla closer to established competitors in the region. Mercedes-Benz already offers five-year warranties with unlimited kilometres, while BMW and Volkswagen provide five-year coverage with distance limits. Among electric vehicle-focused brands, Kia and BYD continue to advertise longer headline warranty periods, although Tesla’s update removes a commonly cited disadvantage relative to rivals.

Tesla said the extension does not affect its battery and drive unit warranty. Rear-wheel-drive versions of the Model 3 and Model Y will continue to receive eight years or 160,000 kilometres of coverage, while Long Range and Performance variants remain covered for eight years or 192,000 kilometres. All battery warranties include a guarantee that capacity will remain at or above 70% during the coverage period.
Tesla did not indicate whether similar warranty changes would be introduced in other markets. In Canada and the United States, the company currently offers a four-year or 80,000-kilometre (50,000-mile) basic vehicle warranty, with regional differences typically determined by local market conditions and competition.
