Tesla (TSLA.O) has set its sights on South America, with plans to establish a significant presence in Chile. Public documents reveal that Tesla Chile was officially registered on September 28, marking the company’s initial foray into the South American market.
The registration, published in the Official Gazette, outlines the scope of Tesla Chile’s activities, encompassing the import, export, manufacturing, marketing, distribution, and sale of vehicles, with a particular emphasis on electric vehicles. Additionally, the registration includes provisions for involvement in other commercial activities, such as the generation and supply of energy and electricity.
While the registered headquarters is in Santiago, the documentation allows for the establishment of branches or agencies in other cities within Chile or abroad. This move represents Tesla’s first direct commercial operation in South America.
In tandem with the registration, Tesla has commenced recruitment efforts for various positions, including a general manager, sales advisers, and service technicians. A recent LinkedIn post detailed the search for a general manager in Chile, emphasizing the pivotal role in shaping the company’s corporate image and expediting the transition to sustainable energy.
Chile, known for possessing one of the world’s largest lithium reserves, has become a focal point for electric vehicle manufacturers. Earlier this year, the country announced plans to assume state control over its lithium supply. Notably, China’s BYD, a major player in the electric car industry, unveiled intentions to establish a $290 million battery component plant in Chile.
Tesla’s expansion into South America aligns with the global push towards sustainable energy solutions. The company, led by CEO Elon Musk, has remained at the forefront of the electric vehicle revolution. As Tesla continues to broaden its geographical reach, the move into Chile signals a strategic step in capturing the growing market for electric vehicles in the region.
Tesla has not issued an official statement in response to inquiries regarding its Chilean expansion at the time of this writing.
