Tesla has solidified its leadership in the electric vehicle (EV) market, securing three positions within the top 10 best-selling EVs in the U.S. for 2023, according to EV sales data released by Kelley Blue Book and Cox Automotive. The Tesla Model Y emerged as the top-selling EV, surpassing all non-Tesla counterparts in the top 10 combined, with an estimated 394,497 units sold. The Model 3 followed closely as the second-best-selling EV, with 220,910 units, while the Model X secured the ninth spot with a total of 23,015 units.
In the overall ranking, Tesla’s dominance was evident, with the combined sales of its Model Y and Model 3 outpacing all other non-Tesla EVs in the top 10. The rest of the top 10 best-selling EVs featured models from Chevy, Ford, Volkswagen, Hyundai, Rivian, and BMW.
Notably, the Model S landed at the 14th spot in the rankings, and the Cybertruck was absent from the data, likely due to the ongoing ramp-up of production and limited deliveries of its launch edition. While the majority of automakers in the top 10 produce both gas and battery-electric vehicles (BEVs), Tesla stands out as a key player leading in EV units produced and sold. Rivian, the only other automaker in the top 10 exclusively dedicated to EVs, along with Vinfast and Fisker, were acknowledged as part of the “100 percent EVs club.”
Insights from the data revealed that the Model Y contributed significantly, accounting for about a third of all EV sales in the U.S. in 2023. Additionally, Tesla, as a brand, achieved an overall market share of 4.20 percent, irrespective of powertrain. The data also indicated a downward price trend in the EV market for 2023, following Tesla’s substantial price cuts early in the year.
