Tesla Dominated European Electric Vehicle Markets in 2023

Tesla released its delivery and production figures for the year, announcing the successful achievement of its ambitious 1.8 million unit goal. Fueled by substantial market shares in both the United States and Europe, Tesla appears poised to maintain its dominance in these crucial regions.

While Tesla faced stiff competition in China from BYD, its performance in Europe showcased a clear and substantial lead. According to data from EU-EVs, a platform tracking registration figures in EU countries, Tesla’s market share in key European nations stood out prominently.

In the United Kingdom, Tesla commanded a 15.3 percent market share, surpassing competitors MG and BMW by a significant margin of over 6 percent. The Model Y emerged as the top-selling electric vehicle, securing 34,334 registrations, while the Model 3 claimed the fourth position with 12,774 registrations.

Tesla’s presence in Norway was particularly notable, capturing an impressive 23.6 percent of the total market share. Once again, the Model Y led the pack with 23,058 registrations, outpacing Volkswagen’s ID.4 by nearly four times.

The Netherlands witnessed Tesla’s dominance with the Model Y securing 13,714 registrations, contributing to a 17 percent market share. Tesla outpaced BMW and Volkswagen, with the Volvo XC40 emerging as the second best-seller with 6,309 units registered.

In Spain, Tesla’s Model Y and Model 3 took the lead in EV sales, contributing to a 22 percent market share in 2023. The Model Y’s 6,843 units and the Model 3’s 6,123 units played a significant role in Tesla’s delivery of 13,260 units in Spain.

Contrary to expectations, Tesla maintained its market share lead in Sweden, surpassing Volkswagen by over 2 percent. Holding 17.4 percent of the EV market share, Tesla’s Model Y registered 16,576 units, outpacing the ID.4 by Volkswagen.

Denmark proved to be a stronghold for Tesla, securing an impressive 34.5 percent market share, surpassing Volkswagen by a substantial margin. The Model Y dominated the market with 17,975 units registered, further solidifying Tesla’s position as a formidable player in Denmark.
