Tesla has officially discontinued its planned range extender for the Cybertruck, weeks after the optional add-on quietly vanished from its website.
The $16,000 accessory, aimed at improving the electric pickup’s criticized range performance, will no longer be offered, the company confirmed in customer communications.

The Cybertruck has faced scrutiny over real-world driving range, which reviewers reported could drop to as low as 240 miles—and even below 100 miles under certain heavy load or winter conditions.
In response, Tesla introduced a modular battery pack designed to be placed in the truck bed, initially promising to extend range to approximately 470 miles for the dual-motor variant and 440 miles for the tri-motor Cyberbeast.
These projections were later revised to 445 miles and 415 miles, respectively, when equipped with all-terrain tires. Despite the accessory’s intended role in addressing range limitations, Tesla has now informed customers who placed a $2,000 deposit that the product has been cancelled. The company is offering full refunds, stating that it is “no longer planning to sell Range Extender for Cybertruck.”

The move comes as Tesla grapples with additional challenges surrounding the Cybertruck, including a recall of all units produced between November 13, 2023, and February 27, 2025, due to potential issues with loose trim pieces.
While the Cybertruck has received praise for its performance capabilities and off-road handling, it remains unclear why the range extender was withdrawn. Tesla has not issued a public statement on the decision.
