In a strategic move, Tesla has enlisted the expertise of Michael Hildebrand, a seasoned leader with a proven track record in capital project management, to oversee the expansion of Giga Nevada. The electric vehicle manufacturer is set to invest an impressive $3.6 billion into enhancing the factory’s capabilities.

The expansion plans for Giga Nevada were initially unveiled in January, outlining the establishment of two new manufacturing segments within the facility. These dedicated areas will focus on the production of high-volume Semi vehicles and cutting-edge 4680 cells, boasting an impressive annual capacity of 100 Gigawatt hours (GWh). Once the expansion is completed, the sprawling factory will span over 4 million square feet, managed by a workforce of more than 3,000 skilled employees.

Despite being granted substantial tax incentives for the factory, the absence of construction activity for nearly eight months since the initial announcement raised questions about the project’s timeline. However, recent developments suggest that the wheels might be set in motion sooner rather than later, with the inclusion of Michael Hildebrand among Tesla’s recent hires.

Having joined the company in June, Hildebrand assumes the pivotal role of Leader – Gigafactory Nevada Expansion Engineering and Construction, as indicated by his professional profile on LinkedIn. This marks a significant shift for Hildebrand, who spent close to two decades in the employ of pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly and Company, his previous employer. Notably, Hildebrand’s last designation at Eli Lilly was that of Executive Director of Projects, where he played a pivotal role in managing a multi-billion-dollar manufacturing facility.

One of Hildebrand’s notable achievements at Eli Lilly includes leading a capital project valued at over $2 billion for the establishment of a novel greenfield parenteral manufacturing site. In this capacity, he was accountable for critical aspects such as site selection, project scope, estimation, scheduling, and overall project execution. Hildebrand’s approach to project delivery encompassed a strategic blend of design-build and design-bid-build methodologies, carefully optimized to ensure adherence to tight budget controls while expediting project timelines. A testament to his proficiency, Hildebrand managed to accelerate the realization of the greenfield site’s concept to operational status by a remarkable 18-month period.
