China’s JAC Replicates Tesla Semi with Striking Resemblance, Featuring Central Driving Position

In a move that could potentially disrupt the landscape of heavy transportation, a Chinese manufacturer, JAC Motors, has unveiled a prototype that shares an uncanny resemblance to the all-electric Tesla Semi. The emergence of this clone prototype suggests a significant interest in electric heavy-duty vehicles and could signal a new contender entering the market.

Photographs of the prototype were captured at a JAC Motors facility, a company known for producing a range of passenger cars and for its partnership with Volkswagen. Notably, the prototype’s design draws evident inspiration from the Tesla Semi, particularly in the shape of its cab. The dimensions mirror those of the Tesla vehicle, and a prominent feature is the expansive windshield that seamlessly extends from the A-pillars to the side windows. Although the camouflage on the prototype accentuates these elements, it’s worth noting that if these sections were finished in black, akin to the Tesla Semi, their visibility would be considerably reduced.

Observing the front end, it becomes evident that the prototype’s headlights are strategically positioned, mirroring the Tesla Semi’s configuration, just preceding the front wheel arches. The overall front-end profile is notably reminiscent of the Tesla vehicle. One distinct difference, however, is the possible inclusion of either a window or a solar panel just above the windshield on the JAC prototype, a feature not found on the electric Semi. Additionally, attention is drawn to the digital wing mirrors on the prototype, while the initial Tesla Semi concept included similar digital mirrors before opting for traditional mirrors in the road-ready model.

Turning attention to the cabin, a sole interior image shared by Inside EVs showcases a centrally-positioned seat in the JAC prototype—a design choice notably akin to the Tesla Semi. The cabin further boasts two prominent screens on either side of the steering wheel, a design element mirroring the arrangement in the Tesla vehicle.

The introduction of this JAC Motors prototype sparks speculation about the potential future competition within the electric heavy transportation sector. As electric commercial vehicles continue to gain traction in the market, this development signifies a noteworthy stride towards reshaping the industry landscape. However, the extent of the prototype’s likeness to the Tesla Semi, as well as its performance capabilities, production timeline, and market reception, remain essential aspects to monitor as the electric transportation revolution progresses.
