Tesco has rolled out its 1,000th electric delivery van in the United Kingdom, marking a significant step toward its goal of operating a fully electric home delivery fleet by 2030. The milestone van will serve customers from Tesco Extra in Cardiff, making the store one of only three in Wales with an entirely electric delivery fleet.

The Cardiff Extra branch’s 20-vehicle fleet now carries out around 5,000 deliveries each week. Although Tesco did not specify which model its 1,000th van is, photographs suggest it could be a Maxus. Earlier this year, the retailer added its first Iveco eDaily to the fleet and said it plans to expand its use of the model. Tesco mainly relies on AC charging infrastructure at its stores and works with EO Charging to install dedicated chargers at its depots.

Tesco’s electric fleet has grown quickly over the past year. In March 2025, it operated 720 electric vans and expects to “nearly double” that number to about 1,250 by spring 2026. In addition to its electric delivery vans, Tesco also runs four large electric HGVs and 42 biomethane-powered trucks for its distribution network.

Ashwin Prasad, Tesco’s Chief Executive Officer, said the latest addition reflects the company’s progress toward its climate goals. “The delivery of our 1,000th EV home delivery van to our Cardiff Extra store is an important step in our journey towards a fully electric home delivery fleet across the UK by 2030,” Prasad said. “Making this change will reduce our carbon emissions as a business, improve the air quality for the communities we serve in Cardiff, and help us reach our commitment to be carbon neutral in our own operations by 2035.”
