Tata Group’s ambitious battery cell factory in Somerset, England, is progressing as key construction phases are completed. The facility, spearheaded by Tata’s battery arm, Agratas, has finalized piling operations, while National Grid is preparing the site’s power infrastructure. The plant is set to begin operations in 2026.
Situated at the Gravity Smart Campus near Bridgwater, the 40 GWh factory is expected to become a major player in the UK’s electric vehicle supply chain. National Grid has stated that by the early 2030s, the facility could supply nearly half of the battery cells required by the UK’s automotive industry. The project is also forecasted to generate approximately 4,000 jobs, bolstering the local economy.

“More than 16,800 piles have been successfully installed. Key infrastructure is also in place, including a dedicated construction access road and fully operational site cabins,” Agratas confirmed in a company statement.
Jefferson Weber, Head of UK Construction at Agratas, underlined the critical role of power supply in the project’s success. “The electrical connection being developed by National Grid is a critical infrastructure project that will supply the essential power needed to operate our new facility. This connection is fundamental to ensuring the reliable energy supply required to support what will be the UK’s largest battery manufacturing facility,” he said.

The factory is expected to serve Tata and its UK-based subsidiary JLR, while also supplying battery technology for other applications, including two-wheelers, commercial vehicles, and stationary energy storage solutions.
UK Energy Minister Michael Shanks praised the development as a milestone in the country’s clean energy transformation. “In Somerset, and across the country, the clean energy transition is revitalizing our industrial heartlands and bringing opportunity, growth, and jobs to our communities,” he remarked. He also highlighted the government’s Clean Energy Action Plan, which aims to streamline grid connections for strategic infrastructure projects.
