Svolt Energy, the independent battery maker that spun off from Great Wall Motor, has unveiled its new fast-charging power battery at its 5th Battery Day event in Chengdu, Sichuan. The company introduced the Fengxing Short Blade Battery, which features an impressive 6C charging multiplier and an energy density of 185 Wh/kg, marking a significant step in advancing charging efficiency.

The Fengxing battery is capable of charging from 10% to 80% state of charge (SOC) in just 8.5 minutes, showcasing the rapid charging capabilities that could become a key technology for future electric vehicles. Powered by Svolt’s third-generation short blade cells, the battery uses high-energy cathode and anode materials to achieve its performance. Svolt also offers a long-life version of the Fengxing, which is designed to last 15 years or 600,000 kilometers, with a cycle life exceeding 5,000.

In the battery industry, the “C” rating refers to the charging multiplier, with a 6C battery capable of charging fully in just 10 minutes, which exceeds the standard 5C charge rate of current production batteries. Svolt’s new technology positions it alongside other major players such as CATL and BYD, who are also working on fast-charging solutions.

In addition to the fast-charging Fengxing, Svolt unveiled its first battery specifically designed for off-road vehicles. This battery is capable of operating in extreme temperature ranges from -43°C to 60°C and offers high reliability in harsh conditions. It has a capacity of up to 59 kWh and supports 800V charging. This technology is already being used in Great Wall Motor’s Tank 500 Hi-4-Z, which was launched earlier this month.

Svolt also introduced new battery models for the commercial vehicle sector, including a fast-charging version with a 91.4 kWh capacity that supports a 4C charge rate, allowing for an 80% charge in just 14 minutes. The long-life commercial vehicle battery has a 95.7 kWh capacity and a 3C charge multiplier, along with an 8-year or 1.5-million-kilometer warranty.

As part of its growth, Svolt reported that it produced its one millionth battery pack at its Chengdu manufacturing facility. The company has also seen a rise in international shipments, with 5.8 GWh of battery packs delivered overseas in 2023, making up 27% of its total shipments during that period. In China, Svolt held a 3.49% market share in November, positioning itself as one of the top battery suppliers in the country.
