Public transport operator MZK Toruń has officially added 40 Solaris Urbino 12 electric buses to its fleet, strengthening the Polish city’s transition toward zero-emission public transportation.
The vehicles were formally handed over on June 9 during a ceremony attended by representatives of Miejski Zakład Komunikacyjny (MZK) in Toruń and Solaris Bus & Coach. The delivery follows a contract signed in May 2025 and includes not only the buses but also charging infrastructure supplied by Solaris.
Charging Network Included in Contract
As part of the agreement, Solaris will provide both plug-in and pantograph charging systems. The charging infrastructure will be installed at the operator’s depot as well as at selected locations across the city, enabling both overnight and fast charging operations.
The latest delivery significantly expands the electric bus fleet that MZK Toruń began developing in 2022. With the addition of the new vehicles, the operator now has a total of 50 fully electric Solaris buses in service.
Mateusz Figaszewski of Solaris Bus & Coach said the project reflects the city’s ongoing commitment to sustainable transportation.
“We are pleased that another 40 battery-electric buses from Solaris have joined the fleet of MZK Toruń. The new zero-emission fleet represents a continuation of the investment in sustainable public transport for the residents of the city and surrounding areas.”
Equipped With Advanced Safety Features
The newly delivered Solaris Urbino 12 electric buses are low-floor and fully air-conditioned models designed to improve passenger accessibility and comfort.
The vehicles are also equipped with safety technologies that comply with the European Union’s General Safety Regulation 2 (GSR2). These include the Blind Spot Information System (BSIS), which helps detect cyclists located in blind spots, and the Moving Off Information System (MOIS), designed to identify pedestrians and cyclists positioned in front of the vehicle when it begins moving.
The systems provide warnings to drivers to help reduce the risk of collisions in urban environments.
Longstanding Partnership Between Solaris and Toruń
Solaris and the city of Toruń have maintained a business relationship since 2010. Over that period, the manufacturer has delivered 189 buses to the city’s public transport operator.
In recent years, most of those deliveries have consisted of low-emission or fully electric models, reflecting broader efforts by Polish cities to modernize public transportation fleets and reduce urban emissions.
The latest delivery further strengthens Solaris’ presence in the domestic market while supporting Toruń’s ongoing investment in cleaner public transport solutions.
