Scout, the Volkswagen-owned automaker, has revealed plans to expand its electric vehicle lineup to include extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs) alongside its battery electric models.
The upcoming EREV versions of the Traveler SUV and Terra pickup aim to address range anxiety by integrating a small combustion engine to recharge the battery, providing a total range exceeding 500 miles (805 km).
The range-extender engine, positioned at the rear of the body-on-frame chassis, is designed to maintain the quiet and smooth operation characteristic of electric vehicles, according to Scout’s head of strategy, Ryan Decker.
While specific engine details remain unconfirmed, possible candidates include a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder or a smaller alternative, such as a 1.0-liter three-cylinder engine offered in other Volkswagen markets.
Scout CEO Scott Keogh highlighted the appeal of the EREV models, noting they would retain the capabilities of battery-electric versions, such as 100% gradability, ground clearance, and storage features like a frunk.
The EREV line will adopt the name “Harvester” and cater to customers seeking enhanced driving range and versatility. Additionally, Scout announced plans to offer a roof-mounted satellite receiver for connectivity in remote areas, further broadening the vehicles’ functionality.
