German auto supplier Schaeffler has introduced a new device aimed at making the repair of electric motors easier and more cost-efficient, the company said on Monday. The tool, known as the E-Axle Repair Tool, enables workshops to fix motors without needing to replace them entirely.
According to Schaeffler Vehicle Lifetime Solutions, the equipment allows for “precise, non-contact disassembly and reassembly of rotors and stators,” a process complicated by the strong magnetic forces inside permanently excited synchronous motors. The tool applies pressing forces of up to 10,000 newtons, making it possible to separate components, replace bearings and loosen seals without damage.
“Precise guidance during rotor removal is essential to prevent contact between components. Any abrasion left inside the motor could lead to damage,” said Stephan Niese, Director Global Product Management ePowertrain at Schaeffler Vehicle Lifetime Solutions. He added that the tool’s design offers ergonomic handling with access from three open working sides.
The E-Axle Repair Tool is designed for use across a wide range of electric drive units and is available for workshops seeking to expand into motor repair services. Schaeffler said the approach offers sustainability and cost benefits by repairing rather than replacing parts. “This new tool opens the door to the world of electric motor repair – and to the future of the e-powertrain,” Niese said.
