Scania demonstrated the precision capabilities of its autonomous truck technology through a coordinated stunt involving professional mountain biker Matt Jones, highlighting advancements in AI-driven vehicle systems currently deployed in mining operations and under development for highway freight transport. The event, conducted in partnership with Red Bull and Silicon Valley-based PlusAI, saw two self-driving trucks move in precise synchronization, creating a sub-one-second window for Jones to jump between them.
The demonstration required extensive planning and multiple development phases, including software development, practice sessions, and safety validation protocols. Scania engineers, alongside partners at Red Bull and PlusAI, spent several months ensuring the trucks’ timing and coordination met the demonstration’s stringent safety and precision requirements.
Scania’s autonomous technology is already operational in the mining sector, where fully self-driving trucks are deployed for customer use. These systems aim to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and mitigate driver shortages in off-road environments. Meanwhile, hub-to-hub highway transport applications are under development, with European road trials conducted with safety drivers. Scania integrates PlusAI’s AI-based autonomous technology with its commercial vehicle platforms and proprietary software to create factory-built autonomous solutions.
“Transport is a cornerstone of our daily lives, and with that comes enormous responsibility to get goods to the right person or company in the most safe and efficient way,” said Peter Hafmar, Head of Autonomous Solutions at Scania. “This challenge was a glimpse of what’s possible when breakthrough autonomous technology delivers precision and safety you can count on.”
The demonstration underscores Scania’s approach of combining its commercial vehicle platforms, in-house software, and PlusAI’s AI technology, while adhering to safety protocols suitable for both mining and highway applications, positioning the company at the forefront of autonomous commercial transport innovation.
