Transit authorities in San Mateo County have approved a $36.3 million charging infrastructure agreement aimed at supporting the district’s growing fleet of electric buses, the San Mateo County Transit District (SamTrans) said.

The project will begin with upgrades at SamTrans’ South Base facility, including high-capacity chargers, overhead pantograph dispensers and enhanced electrical and communication systems. While detailed specifications of the hardware have not yet been disclosed, the investment is expected to cover charging for the 37 electric buses currently operating and accommodate up to 110 additional zero-emission buses in the future.

“This investment is about more than just buses – it’s about cleaner air, healthier communities, and a more sustainable future for San Mateo County,” said Zhiming Fan, SamTrans’ Director of Infrastructure. “By building the infrastructure now, we’re ensuring that zero-emission transit will be the backbone of our service for decades to come.”

The initiative is backed by funding from federal and state sources including the Federal Transit Administration, the Bay Area Air District, California’s Local Partner Program Competitive fund, and the Low Carbon Transit Operations Program. U.S.-based Clark Construction Group will serve as a strategic partner for the project, which also includes modifications to the South Base facility entrance.

Work is scheduled to begin later this year, although no specific timeline has been announced. SamTrans currently operates 74 routes and two on-demand service areas across the county.
