Rivian, the electric vehicle manufacturer, has identified a potential issue with the side curtain airbags in its R1S SUV and has initiated a recall campaign. The problem is related to the fasteners that secure the airbags to the roof rails. The company first became aware of the issue on February 16, 2023, when a vehicle at its assembly plant in Normal, Illinois, had a loose airbag.
Rivian launched an investigation into the manufacturing error to determine the root cause of the issue. While the company has not provided specifics on what caused the defect, it has identified that the problem is linked to 30 R1S SUVs. Fortunately, there have been no reports of accidents, injuries, or deaths related to the problematic part.

However, the loose fasteners could cause the airbag to deploy improperly, increasing the risk of injury in the event of an accident. Therefore, the automaker has decided to recall 30 R1Ss built at its Normal, Illinois, plant between October 28, 2022, and January 21, 2023. The recall includes both 2022 and 2023 model year vehicles.
Starting on April 28, Rivian will contact affected R1S owners to inspect all vehicles and properly secure the side curtain airbag fasteners into the roof rails. If necessary, the automaker will replace the airbag completely, and all repairs will be made free of charge. In the event that an owner has already paid for repairs related to this issue, a reimbursement plan has been established.
Rivian’s proactive approach to identifying and addressing potential safety issues is commendable, and R1S owners should heed the recall and contact the automaker promptly to arrange for necessary repairs.
