Rivian’s upcoming R2 electric SUV has achieved efficiency figures comparable to Tesla’s Model Y Performance, according to newly released U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) certification data, highlighting increasing competition in the high-volume electric crossover segment.
The EPA figures show the Rivian R2 Performance AWD and the 2026 Tesla Model Y Performance both achieve a combined efficiency rating of 105 MPGe and consume 32 kWh of energy per 100 miles. However, Rivian’s vehicle is rated for an EPA-estimated driving range of 330 miles (531 km), compared with 306 miles (492 km) for Tesla’s Model Y Performance.
Rivian Narrows Tesla’s Efficiency Lead
The results represent one of the closest efficiency comparisons between Tesla and a competing electric SUV. Tesla has long been regarded as an industry leader in EV efficiency, enabling the company to extract more range from smaller battery packs while helping to lower battery costs and improve vehicle margins.

While Rivian’s longer range is partly attributed to a slightly larger battery pack, the comparable efficiency figures suggest the company has made significant progress in optimizing its powertrain and vehicle architecture.
The comparison is particularly notable given the R2’s design characteristics. Unlike the more aerodynamic Tesla Model Y, the Rivian R2 adopts a more upright and rugged SUV profile that would typically result in higher energy consumption.
Wheel Choices Affect Range and Efficiency
EPA certification data also illustrates the impact of wheel and tire configurations on electric vehicle performance.
The R2 Performance AWD equipped with optional 20-inch all-terrain tires records a combined efficiency rating of 99 MPGe, with estimated range falling to 307 miles (494 km). The figures underscore how larger, off-road-oriented tires can increase energy consumption and reduce overall driving range.
Despite the reduction, the all-terrain configuration remains competitive within the midsize electric SUV segment, where buyers often prioritize versatility alongside efficiency.
Competition Intensifies in Electric SUV Market
The R2 is expected to become a key product for Rivian as the company expands beyond its current lineup of premium electric pickups and SUVs. The vehicle is positioned in one of the industry’s most competitive categories, where the Tesla Model Y has established itself as one of the world’s best-selling electric vehicles.
Pricing for the two performance-oriented models is closely aligned. Rivian has listed the R2 Performance Launch Edition at $57,990, while the Tesla Model Y Performance starts at $57,490.
