Rivian is preparing to open its proprietary Rivian Adventure Network (RAN) to non-Rivian electric vehicles, a move expected by the end of 2024. CEO RJ Scaringe provided updates during a recent roundtable, emphasizing the companyâs commitment to creating a reliable, user-friendly charging experience for all EV owners.
Since launching its charging network in 2020, Rivian has focused on placing chargers near scenic destinations, reflecting its outdoors-focused brand. The first site, a “Charging Outpost” near Yosemite National Park, set the tone by transforming an old gas station into a cabin-style charging hub. With 91 sites and 700 chargers in operation, RAN remains relatively small compared to Tesla’s Supercharger network but boasts similar reliability with ~99% uptime.
Scaringe highlighted Rivian’s readiness to adapt to the industry-wide transition to the North American Charging Standard (NACS). While the current network uses CCS connectors, Rivian plans to gradually switch to NACS as vehicles adopt the standard. The chargers will remain adaptable, with the potential for cable replacements or adapters to bridge compatibility gaps.
The Rivian app, potentially enhanced by Rivianâs acquisition of A Better Route Planner, will offer an interface for non-Rivian EV owners. With the expansion in sight, Rivian aims to provide a robust alternative charging network, addressing reliability concerns across the broader EV infrastructure. An official launch announcement is anticipated soon.
