In a bid to transform light fleets in the mining sector, Rivian Automotive and Mining Electric Vehicle Company (MEVCO) have joined forces to introduce electric pickups for mining operations. MEVCO, a specialist in light-duty EVs for mining, aims to convert Rivian’s R1T electric pickup trucks for mining purposes, offering maintenance and charging infrastructure support for mines.

The collaboration, according to MEVCO CEO Matt Cahir, is poised to exceed the expectations of even the most demanding operators. Cahir emphasized the Rivian R1T’s acclaimed on and off-road capabilities, robust design, and adaptability as key factors driving its selection for mining applications. He highlighted the importance of electric solutions in creating safer, healthier environments for mine operators, particularly in subterranean settings where the elimination of tailpipe emissions is crucial.

“The Rivian R1T, in terms of safety and off-road capabilities, stands unparalleled,” stated Cahir.

MEVCO’s conversion of the Rivian R1T involves adding mining-specific components, with minimal modifications to the vehicle’s original electric drive system. This approach differs from previous projects, such as the conversion of 8,500 Toyota off-road vehicles to electric drives, which required more extensive modifications.

Rivian’s Vice President of Strategy, Dagan Mishoulam, expressed enthusiasm for MEVCO’s decision to electrify its fleet with Rivian vehicles. Mishoulam noted that while Rivian is known for its commercial vans, it is gratifying to see its R1 vehicles integrated into MEVCO’s fleet.

The collaboration marks a significant step in Rivian’s expansion beyond its traditional offerings. While the company is recognized for its R1T pickup and R1S SUV models, which it produces under its own brand, it recently unveiled the R2 electric SUV. The R2 is slated for delivery from the first half of 2026, with prices starting at around $45,000. Rivian’s commitment to innovation and sustainability is evident in its efforts to reduce tailpipe emissions and provide environmentally friendly solutions for various industries.
