Rivian is expanding its vehicle software ecosystem with the introduction of an Apple Watch companion app for its R1 lineup, enabling owners to control key vehicle functions directly from their wrist, the company said.

The Apple Watch app will be available to both first- and second-generation R1 vehicles through software version 2026.03, alongside Rivian mobile app version 3.9.

The update allows drivers to lock or unlock doors, vent windows, sound the alarm, adjust cabin temperature and set a target state of charge using the watch’s digital crown. Users can also configure up to four customizable quick controls for frequently used functions.

For second-generation R1 vehicles, Rivian said the Apple Watch can also function as a passive digital key once configured, allowing the vehicle to unlock automatically as the driver approaches. “Just walk up, hop in, and go,” Rivian said in its release describing the hands-free entry feature. First-generation R1 vehicles support tap-to-lock and unlock functionality, provided the app is actively open on the watch.

Rivian said the Apple Watch integration is intended to make short trips and charging stops more seamless, particularly in situations where drivers may not have their phone readily available. The company has previously rolled out phone-as-key functionality and continues to add features through over-the-air software updates.

The move underscores Rivian’s focus on software as a differentiator, positioning its vehicles as part of a broader connected ecosystem that extends beyond the car itself. The company has steadily expanded app-based controls and personalization features as it seeks to enhance the ownership experience for its electric trucks and SUVs.
