Republic Services Unveils First Fully Integrated Electric Recycling and Waste Collection Truck

Republic Services has announced the launch of the industry’s first fully integrated electric recycling and waste collection truck. With over 17,000 trucks, Republic Services is among the largest operators of vocational fleets that provide residential and commercial recycling and waste solutions.

The company has committed to significant electrification efforts through its supplier partnerships, making it the only environmental services provider in the United States with approved emissions reduction targets from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). In 2019, Republic revealed its long-term sustainability goals, including reducing absolute Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 35% by 2030, and the launch of the electric truck is a major step toward achieving that goal.

Republic Services plans to begin operating two fully integrated electric waste trucks this fall, with electric garbage trucks expected to represent 50% of all new trucks purchased over the next five years. The company has collaborated with engineers from OshKosh Corp to incorporate operational and safety features such as improved visibility, 360-degree cameras, and lane departure sensors into the truck.

President and CEO of Republic, Jon Vander Ark, expressed his excitement for the new electric truck, stating that their engagement with Oshkosh on the truck of the future will accelerate the transition of their fleet while providing advanced safety features and technology. He added that the company will continue to invest in innovations that reduce emissions, benefit the environment, and help customers meet their sustainability goals.

The waste and recycling collection business is ideal for electric vehicles as the trucks run consistent routes and are left to sit overnight. Additionally, gas-powered garbage trucks often idle for prolonged periods while picking up and loading waste, releasing harmful emissions. Electric garbage trucks offer zero emissions, promote cleaner air in communities, and can save cities on maintenance and gas expenses.

Republic Services is setting an example for the industry by setting a clear roadmap to electrify its fleet. The company’s electric trucks will hit the streets for residential collections in Phoenix, Arizona, this fall, with additional areas planned for 2024, including Santa Ana and Carlsbad, California, and Portland, Oregon. The launch of the first fully integrated electric recycling and waste collection truck is a significant milestone in Republic Services’ commitment to sustainability and a cleaner future.
