In a strategic move to solidify its European presence and enhance its battery recycling capabilities, Redwood Materials has successfully acquired Redux Recycling GmbH, a lithium-ion battery recycling firm based in Europe. This acquisition marks a significant step forward for Redwood, offering them a well-established foothold in the European Union, with plans to expand operations and boost their battery recycling capacity. Additionally, it will facilitate closer collaboration with existing suppliers across Europe, reinforcing Redwood’s commitment to sustainable battery solutions.
Redux Recycling’s state-of-the-art facility, strategically located in Bremerhaven on Germany’s North Sea coast, boasts an impressive annual processing capacity of 10,000 tonnes. This capability enables Redux to efficiently recycle a wide array of battery form factors and lithium-ion battery chemistries. Their facility is adept at handling a diverse range of batteries, including those from electric vehicles, E-bikes, stationary storage systems, as well as consumer electronics such as cell phones, laptops, and power drills.

One of the key strengths of Redux Recycling lies in its proprietary technology, which empowers the extraction of valuable materials from batteries. This includes coveted elements such as cobalt, lithium, nickel, and manganese, all achieved with an impressive recovery rate exceeding 95 percent. This efficiency in material recovery aligns perfectly with Redwood’s mission to establish a localized global battery supply chain and produce anode and cathode components in the United States, primarily sourced from recycled batteries.
Redwood Materials, in an official press release, emphasized the broader implications of this acquisition. With the integration of Redux Recycling, Redwood welcomes an experienced team of approximately 70 technical experts, including chemical engineers, metallurgists, and material scientists. This addition will complement their existing European workforce. The expertise of these professionals, particularly in mechanical separation techniques, holds significant value for Redwood’s operations. It enables the recovery of high-purity metal concentrate, a crucial element in the production of battery materials.
The press release further highlighted the synergy between Redwood’s technology and Redux’s capabilities. While Redux specializes in pre-treatment and mechanical separation, Redwood Materials brings advanced material recovery processes like hydrometallurgy to the table. This collaborative approach is set to strengthen Redwood’s position as a pioneer in sustainable battery solutions and underscores its commitment to environmentally responsible practices.
In the ever-evolving landscape of battery recycling and sustainable materials sourcing, Redwood Materials’ acquisition of Redux Recycling GmbH signals a significant stride towards a greener and more efficient future for the electric vehicle and electronics industries in Europe and beyond.
