Ram Brand CEO Mike Koval Jr. recently announced at the New York Auto Show that a mid-sized electric pickup truck could be on its way from the Dodge subsidiary. The concept for the vehicle was unveiled at a special dealer convention, and Koval revealed that the response was overwhelmingly positive.
The potential for a smaller electric truck from Ram is crucial if the brand wants to expand to Europe. Large pickup trucks don’t sell well in the European market, so a mid-sized option would be essential for Ram’s success in the region. The last mid-sized truck Ram sold was the Dakota, which was discontinued in 2011.
The upcoming 1500 REV, Ram’s first electric truck, is expected to go on sale late next year. It will be available with either a 168 kWh or 229 kWh battery pack, with the latter boasting a range of up to 500 miles. The 229 kWh pack will be the largest battery equipped on any passenger vehicle, surpassing the GMC Hummer EV’s 212 kWh unit. With a total power output of 654 hp and a 0-60 mph time of 4.4 seconds, the 1500 REV is no slouch in the performance department.
But what sets trucks apart from other vehicles is their ability to tow and haul cargo. The 1500 REV does not disappoint in this area, with a towing capacity of up to 14,000 pounds and a maximum payload capacity of 2,700 lbs.
Ram’s potential mid-sized electric pickup truck would be a great addition to the brand’s lineup, especially as they look to expand to new markets. With the success of the 1500 REV, it’s clear that Ram is taking electric trucks seriously and looking to lead the charge in the industry.
