German electric vehicle charging operator Qwello has secured two contracts from the City of Copenhagen granting it the right to install and operate up to 140 public alternating current (AC) charging stations across multiple districts of the Danish capital.
Under the agreements, Qwello will roll out chargers in areas including Stefansgade, Nørrebroparken, Lundtoftegade and Vesterbro Vest under one contract, while the second covers Bispebjerg, Gl. Sydhavn, Rosenvænget, and Svanemøllen Syd and Øst. Qwello said the contracts represent a milestone in its expansion across Northern Europe.

Unlike installations in some German cities, Copenhagen will not use Qwello’s charging stations with integrated cables. Instead, the company will deploy its next-generation CP22 model, which it said was designed specifically for dense urban environments. The CP22 enables the simultaneous charging of two vehicles while minimising space requirements, featuring a compact footprint of around 40 by 30 centimetres, two Type 2 connectors and a seven-inch display.
Qwello said the chargers will primarily be installed in residential and mixed-use districts, targeting drivers without access to private parking. The company said this approach addresses a key barrier to electric vehicle adoption in urban areas, where curbside charging remains limited.

“Entering Denmark and being selected by the City of Copenhagen is an important milestone for Qwello,” said Nils Gaedt, managing director of Qwello Denmark. He said the project reflects the company’s ability to meet Copenhagen’s standards for sustainable urban mobility, including operating on 100% renewable electricity and using low-emission equipment and service vehicles.
Qwello said it currently operates more than 16,000 charging points under public concessions and private investments, without subsidies. The company offers cities a turnkey charging solution, covering planning, installation, operation and maintenance. It is active in a number of European cities, including Frankfurt, Hamburg, Berlin, Stockholm, London, Paris and Madrid.
