A U.S.-based charging solutions provider, PowerFlex, has become the largest operator of Plug&Charge-enabled stations within Hubject’s network, integrating more than 5,000 charging devices dedicated to electric vehicle fleets, the company said. The development comes as the number of Plug&Charge-capable vehicles across North America has surpassed one million, underscoring accelerating adoption of automated charging technology.
PowerFlex, which focuses on depot charging for commercial fleets, is expanding infrastructure designed to support large-scale electrification of logistics and service vehicles. According to Hubject, the company aims to grow its installed base to 40,000 chargers within two years, potentially maintaining its position as the network’s largest provider.
Plug&Charge technology—based on the ISO 15118 communication standard—allows vehicles to authenticate automatically with charging stations, removing the need for mobile apps, RFID cards, or manual payment steps. While the system has been widely used in public charging, Hubject highlighted its advantages for private depots, where fleet operators require precise tracking of energy use and vehicle readiness.
“Because each charging session is tied to a unique digital certificate, fleet managers can see exactly which vehicle is charging, which charger it’s using, and which driver or account is associated with that session,” Hubject said. “This granular visibility supports accurate billing, reimbursement, cost allocation, and maintenance planning in addition to ensuring route readiness.”
The depot-focused approach also means PowerFlex is not immediately affected by early policy signals from the administration of former U.S. President Donald Trump regarding electric vehicle priorities. However, analysts say broader shifts in federal transport policy could influence long-term adoption of zero-emission technologies.
Hubject said the milestone of more than one million Plug&Charge-enabled vehicles in North America reflects the transition of ISO 15118 authentication from pilot projects to mainstream deployment. “Surpassing one million Plug&Charge-enabled vehicles in North America proves that the industry is ready for scale, and fleets are rapidly becoming our fastest-growing use case,” said Amit Bhonsle, Head of Product at Hubject. “By partnering with PowerFlex, we are bringing the security and automation of ISO 15118 directly to commercial depots—eliminating friction for drivers and ensuring the reliability that mission-critical fleets demand.”
Under the Plug&Charge framework, vehicles and chargers perform a secure digital “handshake” when connected. Digital certificates verify the identities of the vehicle, charging operator, and user account, with Hubject acting as a central trust authority managing these credentials across the ecosystem.
