Polestar Unveils New Design Studio in Gothenburg

Polestar has recently opened a brand new design studio in Gothenburg, Sweden. The studio, which is located next to the company’s global headquarters, has been specifically designed to be the home of up to 120 members of the Polestar design team, led by Maximilian Missoni. The environment combines modernist architecture with the brand’s clean, minimalistic Scandinavian aesthetic, and is set in a dense forest.

The studio has been built on the site of a historic former Volvo facility completed in 1984 by Italian Romaldo Giurgola and local architect Owe Svärd. The building has been fully upgraded while maintaining its unique architectural character. The Polestar Design team will continue to build on the brand’s new design language, which has already been previewed by the Polestar Precept and electric roadster concept cars. The new design language will be carried into production with the Polestar 3, which was launched in October 2022.

The building combines prime materials and details from the original 1980s construction with high-quality, modern Scandinavian design. The new facility includes a specialist showroom area, clay working station, material and colour lab, auditorium, multiple digital studio spaces, management offices, VR rooms, and meeting spaces.

Maximilian Missoni, Polestar’s Head of Design, said that it was important to respect the original intentions when integrating the studio into the building, which is why the original structure and detailing have been showcased. Missoni also noted that the studio features the latest equipment on the inside to make their jobs easier and produce better results in the most efficient way.

The same attention to detail paid to the building runs through Polestar 3, the brand’s new electric SUV. The overall design, with its powerful and wide stance, and low, sweeping roofline, is introduced by the SmartZone and front aero wing. The design was meant to impart a sense of intelligence, which is challenging to convey in car design. Missoni explained that Polestar 3 was designed to express the leading technology and sophistication of the brand while also providing a step into a new era.

The interior of Polestar 3 has been maximized thanks to the long body and wheelbase. The designers reduced surface volumes around the cabin’s component architecture and increased occupant space in all positions. The colors and materials have been carefully selected and combined to express Polestar’s Scandinavian heritage while addressing sustainability and the redefinition of luxury. The full-length glass roof contributes to the airy feel, and Polestar’s signature logo is integrated into the glass roof in a new way – etched between two layers of the laminated glass and only visible when illuminated.

The Polestar 3 will go into production in mid-2023, and the first deliveries in launch markets are expected in the fourth quarter of 2023. The brand’s new design studio is an exciting development that will help to shape the future of Polestar’s design language and ensure that the brand remains at the forefront of electric car design.
