In 2023, Polestar expects to sell around 80,000 electric vehicles, following a record-breaking year in 2022. In that year, the company sold approximately 51,500 vehicles worldwide, with 21,000 of those sales occurring in the fourth quarter. This marked a year-over-year increase of 80%, making 2022 the best year in the company’s history. The company projects a further increase of 60% in sales in 2023, reaching a total of 80,000 units sold.
“I’m proud of the many milestones we achieved in 2022 and in particular the massive team effort that went into delivering our strongest quarter to date – surpassing our 50,000 global volumes target for the year,” Polestar chief executive Thomas Ingenlath said in a statement. “We are now fully focused on 2023. There will be the usual quarterly variations, but I’m confident that we will continue to actively manage our supply chain to meet the growing demand for Polestar 2, commence first deliveries of Polestar 3 and launch Polestar 4.”
The Polestar 3 is a crucial vehicle for the company’s global expansion, as it is significantly more premium and expensive than the current Polestar 2 sedan. It is intended to compete with high-end SUVs like the Porsche Cayenne, as well as all-electric alternatives such as the Rivian R1S.
The entry-level models of the Polestar 3 come equipped with dual electric motors that generate a combined output of 483 horsepower and 620 lb-ft of torque. For added performance, an optional Power Pack is available, increasing the vehicle’s output to 510 horsepower and 671 lb-ft of torque, resulting in a 0-62 mph acceleration time of 4.7 seconds.
